The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (also referred to as the Upper Basilica) was built between 1866 and 1872 as a conjoint confirmation of the legitimacy of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception (proclaimed in 1854 by Pope Pius IX) and of the Marian apparitions in 1858. The footstall of statue in the Grotto of Massabielle reads “I am the immaculate conception”, which, again, strengthens the common theme shared by the two places of worship, that is, the Grotto and the Basilica. The Basilica overtops both the grotto, being placed right on the rock in which the cave is carved, and the Basilica of the Rosary, built later in the late 19th century.
